1. Arrive before your client arrives to get prepared.

Nobody likes to feel rushed. Not you as the artist at work & not your client either. As a photographer, one of your most important jobs is to put your clients at ease. The more comfortable & confident they feel during their photo session, the more authentic work you’ll be able to create together.

If you plan to set up backdrops or style a scene in the studio, be sure to book yourself enough rental time so that you can get completely ready before your client arrives for their photos. This will communicate professionalism & courtesy.

2. Set the mood with good music.

Music plays such an important role in creating an environment that fosters the type of images you’re trying to create. Something mellow & sweet is perfect for a cuddly newborn photo session, whereas you might need some bad girl RiRi to get your client in the right mindset for a more fierce editorial shoot. Plus, nobody likes an awkward silence, so having some tunes on in the background can help put both you & your client at ease.

3. Affirm your client throughout the session.

Give your client positive feedback throughout the shoot. It can be nerve wracking getting in front of the camera, not sure how the images are turning out behind the lens. Let your client know all the ways they are killing it throughout the session so they don’t have to wonder if they’re doing okay.

When you want your client to adjust something about their stance or posing, instead of using negative words like “don’t do that” or “stop doing this,” use positive specific direction that tells them what TO do. Wrap your arms around each other. Squeeze your mom real tight. Let’s try putting your hand on your face like this. And then when things fall into place, pump them up with encouragement.
